Bartholins Origins




A coloured line


The Bartholin abscess was discovered and named by Caspar Bartholin the younger (named after his Grandfather, Caspar Bartholin). He was a Danish physician and anatomist (born on 10th September, 1655; died 11th June, 1738).


He is known for:-


Bartholin cysts

A fluid-filled sac which develops in one of the Bartholin glands or duct caused by an over-secreting gland.


Bartholins Duct

These are the ducts which the Batholin glands drain through.


Bartholin glands

Two pea-sized glands located either side of the vaginal opening. When fuctioning normally they are undetectable by sight or touch. They secrete fluid.

Bartholinitis

Inflammation of Bartholin's glands or their excretory ducts.
